Photo of the Day: Machu Picchu

Inca Ruins

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the greatest sites to visit in all of South America.  The awesomeness of the Inca ruin can only be understood when you are actually there walking through the ancient city.  It’s a very difficult place to take great photos, often cloudy, raining and swarming with tourists.   A patient photographer would probably visit for several days trying to get the perfect picture, but the entrance fee was too steep for us.

Wow AMAZING shot! Ive never been but if you use the man that is standing on the right of the photo as a scale you can see the sheer size of Machu Picchu. It must be HUGE.

How much was the entrance fee in terms of US dollars?

    • Jason August 2, 2010 at 16:54 #

The entrance fee is S/128.00 or $45 USD and much cheaper if you are a student. If you ride the bus from Aguas Calientes, it’s also an additional $7 USD each way.

It’s worth it though to do the hike and forgo the bus ride. We did the three day hike from Ollayantyambo and it was magical. One of the best trips ever. I hear there are now some amazing lodges along the trail if camping is not your thing. Definite bucket-list item. Thanks for the great photo – brought back great memories!

It was worth it for us, but I know it’s not for everyone. There is no way my parents could have made it up that steep climb. I do appreciate that Machu Picchu provides a way for all to see the ruins, regardless of your physical capabilities. We visited Machu Picchu via the Salkantay Trek. It was tough, but wonderful.
