The Salkantay Trek is an alternative hike to Machu Picchu that provides incredible mountain landscapes, jungle vegetation and snow below your boots. The varying environments make it one of the most beautiful and challenging treks to Machu Picchu. Early in the morning rivers had a frozen surface, steam escaped our mouths and mountains were artfully blanketed with snow.

Shaun, I completely agree, it was a difficult trek. By the time we arrived at Machu Picchu, we were done physically. But, yes, well worth it!
Is this the trek that stops at lodges instead of tent camping like the other Inca Trail trips?
Dan, we slept in tents each night during our Salkantay trek and most do. The Salkantay trek and the Lars Trek are the hardest hikes to Machu Picchu. You can do an expensive hike that will include lodges, hot tubs etc. There are treks to Machu Picchu for every type of traveler.
Great picture Jason, the mountains in the distance look gorgeous against the bright blue sky. We unfortunately did not get to do this hike as we were there when the floods were going on. We promised ourselves another time. When we go back I want to do this hike, no lodges hot tubs for this guy.
We were there during the floods too and our trek got cancelled. We arrived 2 days before the devastating floods. But, we decided to come back later in our journey since we would be backtracking North South in South America. It ended up working out well.
