Crazy Fried Foods – Illinois State Fair in Springfield, IL

Yes, we have been to the Illinois State Fair, and it’s a huge spectacle of agriculture, country culture and of course, some of the craziest state fair foods you’ve ever seen or tasted. My visit is justified by visiting my Grandma and Uncle Mike in Jacksonville, Illinois, but after witnessing the big fair, I suggest adding it to your Great American Road Trip if you can swing it. It’s great example of life in the corn and soy fields of America’s midwest.

Beginning in 1853, the Illinois State Fair is one of the longest lasting fairs in America, which has given them plenty of time to discover what foods they can fry.

I could show you the big giant tractors, the best in show of pigs, or baby calf pictures, even if cute, none of them will wet your taste buds like deep fried brownies.

We must not forget the most famous event at the Illinois State Fair, the life-size butter cow. An entire cow sculpted of butter. I am not really sure of the significance of this, except that it’s representative of the dairy farming.

The most iconic and popular fair food in America is the Corn Dog. The Cozy Dog Drive-in, in Springfield, Illinois, claims to have been the first to serve corn dogs on sticks, on June 16, 1946.

You might end up with a heart attack after experimenting with all the foods, but you will definitively get a taste of America’s midwest state fair food.

Hawaii has long been known as the ‘honeymoon island’, popular with those 5 star holiday-makers out there. This, however, is only one side to these glorious islands and backpackers and budget travellers out there you’ll be pleased to hear that Hawaii is affordable and jam packed with adventure.

Travellers often seek out that feeling of being far away from home – pure escapism. Well you can’t get further away than the Hawaiian Islands which are the most distant landmass from any other place in the world. Literally a drop in the ocean.

There are, of course, plenty of resorts and spas where you can immerse yourself in relaxation but this exotic American state asks to be explored. Some of the most beautiful landscapes imaginable and the most exhilarating sports and activities, can all be found here.

Here are a few of the best, affordable activities in Hawaii:

Hawaii Surfing

Hawaii is the birthplace of surfing. With waves that seasoned surfers’ worldwide travel to, you can experience this high octane sport by hiring a board (and a guide!) to show you what to do. Deeply embedded in Polynesian culture, you can surf on the famous Waikiki beach which has good surf for beginners year round. The islands of Kauai, Maui and Oahu are the most popular for this sport.

Hawaii Hot!

The weather in Hawaii is tropical and hot year round. If you want to experience real heat though, what better way to be humbled by the power of earth, than to witness the world’s most active volcano, Kilauea. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is free to enter and jaw dropping to witness. Whether you want to get up close and learn about molten lava or if you fancy sunbathing on unique black volcanic sand, this is a must on any trip to Hawaii’s big island.

The Hawaii Ocean

Hawaii is unique in its ocean wildlife. Most travel agendas for these islands always include whale spotting. Sightings are a regular occurrence here. Whale watching can be done expensively on a guided boat or on the cheap by finding a good spot looking over Honolua beach on the island of Maui. Cross your fingers and with a bit of luck you might see a humpback or two.

Once you’ve seen the oceans biggest creature from afar, why not get up close and snorkel with the smaller stuff? The Hawaiian Islands have some of the best snorkelling in the world. For a tiny fee, you can hire snorkelling gear and marvel at the underwater world in panoramic view. You can of course, scuba dive too but this will cost you a good deal more. Picking up an underwater camera is well worth it here as you can capture the beauty of Hawaii’s reefs really well.

Hawaii Golfing

Enthusiasts worldwide come to Hawaii for its magnificent golfing ranges. This is a great way to spend a day amongst pristine courses that are both beautiful and challenging. The PGA tour plays one of its world famous matches of golf in Hawaii and the ranges here are not be missed, whether you are a pro or novice.

Is there a better activity to do for free? Well not only does Hawaii have some of the most spectacular treks along its many beaches, rain forests and snow-capped mountains; it also has beautiful waterfalls, gorges and pools, nature at its most divine. Get out there and explore.

Friends often ask us what they should do while visiting NYC. There are tons of “things to do in NYC” lists, so this list is for those that constantly ask for our opinion. The truth is, there are an unlimited number of things you can do in the greatest city in the world. Much depends on your time, budget and travel preferences. Start searching for flights to New York, because we have provided you with a huge checklist of things to do!

Be a Tourist in NYC

Our list is for the NYC tourist. It’s for those that don’t have much time, but want to see some of the greatest attractions or iconic travel photos.

NYC is best explored by walking around the different neighborhoods, but beware, it’s very cold in winter. Be sure to ride the subway and hail a cab ride. Purchase a metro card in the subway, which can be used both on the bus and in the subway.

San Francisco has a lot to offer, which is why we consider it one of our best travel cities. We had the benefit of getting a lot of information from our two, originally east coast, friends Samit and Greg who have lived in this city for many years. Our information kit from San Francisco Travel also proved to be valuable, especially the CityPASS. Here are a few neighborhoods we spent time walking during our first visit to San Francisco.

Chinatown

Similar to many large cities in the USA, San Francisco has it’s own Chinatown. But this isn’t just any Chinatown, it’s the largest and oldest in the USA.

Cow Hollow

We spent much of our time walking Union Street in Cow Hollow since our buddy Samit lives just up the hill in Pacific Heights. Cow Hollow rests between Russian Hill and The Presidio, and the Marina District and Pacific Heights. Trendy shopping, restaurants, bars and spas line both Union and Chestnut Street. As you walk along Union Street, at each intersection you have wonderful views of the San Francisco Bay. Victorian style homes surround the shopping areas.

Fisherman’s Wharf

A tourist hot bed, the Fisherman’s Wharf swarms with tour buses, trolley’s and ferries. Here you can book any tour available in San Francisco. Ferry tours, Alcatraz tours and open top bus tours all depart from the Fisherman’s Wharf. Bars and restaurants line the piers, but I would advise escaping the national chains and trying local restaurants in the city for a more authentic experience. Wherever I find a Ripley’s Believe it or not, I try to avoid.

Haight-Ashbury

Identified by the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, Haight-Ashbury is famous for being considered the center of the 60′s hippie movement. Storefronts and wall graffiti bring back memories of rockers, tie dye and drugs. Many stores sell vintage clothes, but ironically across the street from a Goodwill store you will find boutique vintage clothes priced in the hundreds of dollars.

Today’s atmosphere in the neighborhood is a combination of tourists, local hippies and the homeless. As with any tourist destination, store chains have nudged their way into the neighborhood, but icons like Amoeba Music still exist. It’s a fun place to spend the day window shopping, while enjoying a giant burrito from Zona Rosa.

Haight-Ashbury - San Francisco Travel

The Marina District

We recommend The Marina District for the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge or San Francisco Fleet Week. Look across the bay for views of Alcatraz and Sausalito. Run in the waterfront parks under the Golden Gate Bridge or take a walk out on the jagged piers for a picnic. Many photo opportunities in this area.

North Beach

North Beach, most notably Little Italy, is hot spot for tourists with their many cafes providing outdoor seating. Identifiable by the Italy colors painted on light poles, Little Italy isn’t culturally enriching like Chinatown, but it has some famous iconic buildings such as the Columbus Tower, also known as the Sentinel Building, which Francis Ford Coppola owns today.

From Columbus Avenue you are also provided great views of the Transamerica Pyramid, San Francisco’s tallest skyscraper.

Union Square

Are you into high-end shopping? Union Square is surrounded by the most glamorous designer storefronts in the world. Accessible by bus, or San Francisco’s famous trolley cars, visitors will pack them both with filled shopping bags. We didn’t do any shopping here, but as one of the most visited neighborhoods, we felt as though you should know about it.

Getting Around San Francisco

These are just a few of the neighborhoods in San Francisco, but where we spent a lot of our time. Public transportation will get you to all the locations you want to visit, but it’s not quick and it’s rarely on time. Express bus routes to get across town are badly needed.

Electric Streetcar - San Francisco Travel

Trolleys are very expensive to ride, typically a tourist experience and taxis are more expensive than those in NYC. If you are traveling from Asia and searching for cheap flights to New York, just be sure to plan a stopover in San Francisco. If you don’t have much time, book a tour bus through the city. Yes, New York City is still the best city in the USA, but San Francisco makes our list of best travel cities.

San Francisco – Food, Drink and Fleet Week

It’s been an exciting first few days in San Francisco, California. My best friend, Samit, lives in the Pacific Heights neighborhood, which is an ideal location for a 15 minute walk down to the bay where the San Francisco Fleet Week Air Show takes place. Peering through the streets of Victorian mansions you are rewarded with views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Once down to the Marina Green in the San Francisco Bay, I realized how lucky I was to have such clear skies. The pictures of the air show are going to be fantastic!

After a day of catching up on some well needed sleep, I went out to explore Pacific Heights and it’s surrounding neighborhoods.

I have also been testing out some vegan restaurants. For dinner on Thursday night I walked over to China Town to try Loving Hut. There are a few Loving Hut restaurants in the city specializing in vegan food. I won’t be coming back. The menu is typical Chinese, with a lot of vegan meats. The Chinese entres were heavy on the oil and salt. The TV that played vegetarian propaganda was a bit creepy too.

After dinner I stopped off again at Nook Cafe and Wine Bar to enjoy some after dinner drinks. This is my favorite cafe in Pacific Heights. I had a sake drink with orange juice and soy milk.

I scheduled my visit this week specifically to attend San Francisco Fleet Week. I have never attended a Fleet Week before, nor I have ever seen the Blue Angels perform. Practice was today, and that alone, was enough to excite me. The loud roar of the jet engines gets your adrenaline pumping.

After capturing a bunch of pictures from the Blue Angels practice, we searched for some food and drink on Chestnut Street. Tacolicious was jammin with crowds, so we decided to join them. C’mon, you know we love tacos! This place is a lot of fun with delicious Mexican foods! I enjoyed a giant Tecate beer, grilled corn, tacos and some sweet plantains with refried beans. Actually, that’s not true, my buddy Samit ate my tacos. This is how it went down. I ordered two vegetarian tacos, while Samit says to the waitress, “I can’t eat that vegetarian sh|t, I’ll have some meat tacos.” Well, all the tacos came on one plate, which led us to assume they were all his. After 10 minutes, I asked the waitress where my tacos were. She replied that they were included on the taco plate that Samit ate. I took a look at his plate and only meat tacos were left. So, Samit actually ate all the vegetarian tacos and left the meat tacos, because he was full. Remember, this was after claiming that he couldn’t eat that sh|t.

The evening ending in the Brickyard Restaurant and Bar where I watched my Philadelphia Phillies lose and get knocked out of the playoffs. Not good at all.

Saturday begins the real Fleet Week Air Show, one that I can’t wait to photograph and film. Stay tuned!

Visiting San Francisco for the first time!

After visiting London for a week, I didn’t think it could get much better, but it has. From one great city to another, from London travel to San Francisco travel. The liberal and environmental activism in San Francisco has fascinated me for many years. One of my best friends moved out here from New Jersey over 6 years ago and I am just now making the effort to visit. Yes, that’s too long, but it’s also never too late.

San Francisco Fleet Week

Sitting here listening to the Blue Angels jets thunder across the sky, I am even more excited that I arrived during San Francisco Fleet Week. I tried my best to alert the San Francisco Visitors Bureau that I was here in hopes to receive press access to the events this week in order to share some insider photos with you. Still no reply to our emails. Regardless, I have the video recorder and camera ready to watch the ships sail the bay and the Blue Angles streak across the sky.

Nook, a San Francisco Cafe and Wine Bar

After waking up early and finding my buddy’s fridge empty, less the eggs, no good for vegans, I strolled down the street to the Nook Cafe. Quite the trendy place with wine and beer choices and even Sake drinks! I am a big sake fan. It was a bit too early to drink (who am I kidding, it’s never too early) so I enjoyed some fresh orange juice, coffe and a hummus sandwich which was delicious. As I looked around me I saw a bench with 4 patrons in a row all with their silver MacBooks in action. It was a very geometric picture, almost mechanical in a small trendy cafe. Quite the contrast. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the energy to take a picture this morning, but I will have many mornings there I am sure.

Nook Cafe and Wine Bar in San Francisco

It was my first experience with the green San Francisco. There were vegan meals and deserts, but mostly it was the sign above the trash can that captured my attention. It read:

“Don’t throw away your napkins or food scraps, we will properly compost them.”

I like that, I like that a lot. More to come from San Francisco travel.

It’s the last time the Philadelphia Phillies will ever play baseball at Sun Life Stadium in the greater Miami area of Florida. The Florida Marlins are having a new stadium built in Miami that will be ready for the 2012 baseball season. As a die-hard Philadelphia Phillies fan, I figured I should take this opportunity to go see my Phillies play at an extremely discounted ticket price. My brother, back in New Jersey, coaxed me on, by asking why I wasn’t going to the Marlins games to watch the Phillies play in Florida? I didn’t really have an excuse. I immediately went online and purchased 2 tickets behind the visitors dugout (the Phillies dugout for this game) for Aracely and I for the next morning.

Upon arriving to the game to see the great ‘Doc’ Halladay pitch for the Phillies, I noticed obvious contrasts between this ballpark and the Philadelphia ballpark (Citizens Bank Park). First, there was no one there.

The former Joe Robbie stadium was huge, but the open parking lots made it seem even bigger. We paid our $10 and pulled within 5 spots of the stadium perimeter. Basically we were 50 feet from the entrance to the stadium.

Tailgating?

There were a few, mostly just couples grilling and a father and son having a catch. The rowdiness you find in Philly just doesn’t exist here. It’s not just because it’s Miami, it’s because the Florida Marlins stink. When the Phillies stunk, no one came to see them either, so I understand. But, what is unusual is that the majority of the fans attending the game were Phillies fans. I estimate 80% of the fans to be Philly fans. That’s a bit crazy. And that’s where the entire experience seemed awkward, almost like the bizarro world of Seinfeld. Everywhere we looked, red dominated the color spectrum.

Great Seats

These were the best seats I have ever had at a Major League Baseball game. We started 12 rows behind the visitors dugout. Every few innings we crept closer to the wall. With our telephoto lens, I was able to get some incredible pictures of the players batting.

Before the game we were able to watch the great Roy Halladay warm up. He remains extremely focused during his warmups, avoiding all fan contact. Even with dozens of cameras snapping in his face, he doesn’t flinch.

During the 6th inning, newly acquired outfielder Hunter Pence hit a ball that lined to the right field wall. The Marlins outfielder made an attempt to jump up and catch the ball high on the wall, but fans reached over the railing and interfered with the catch. As I stated earlier, there was a majority of Phillies fans in the stands that evening. Well, those fans didn’t want that Marlins outfielder catching the ball. After a video replay review the umpires ruled the double an automatic out. Unfortunately for the umpires, this is not a reviewable play and Philadelphia Phillies manager, Charlie Manuel made sure to make that point clear before getting ejected from the game.

The Longest Game…

After the young Phillies bullpen gave up the tying run, things got very tense. It was a hot day. We were drenched in humidity from Southern Florida’s tropical weather, recovering from an inning long down pour and now we had to last into extra innings. We stopped complaining as soon as things got interesting. The Phillies pitchers, or should I say Herndon, was struggling as usual and in what seemed like every inning, had a Marlins baserunner on 3rd base ready to score. Miraculously, we got out of it 4 innings. In the last inning after 14, our luck ran out and the Marlins won the hard fought game.

Aracely and I watched the last few innings while sitting in the first row of seats behind the Phillies dugout. As the Phillies came in to the dugout each inning, it was almost as if we could have a conversation with them. And sometimes we did, with just a simple, “Amazing Catch Raul!” This was a ballgame I will never forget.

Seaside Heights, New Jersey Boardwalk and Beach

Seaside Heights is a a popular beach town with an amusement-oriented 2 mile plus boardwalk, and numerous clubs and bars, making it a fun party and family atmosphere. The town is also famous for being the location of the hit MTV show “Jersey Shore“. – Wikipedia

We enjoyed enjoyed the boardwalk and beach during Independence Day Weekend and captured these pictures of the Jersey Shore.

New Jersey Boardwalks

New Jersey Boardwalks are full of game stands, pizzerias, souvenir shops, beach gear stores, arcades and ice cream parlors drawing families, teenagers and adults alike. The Seaside Heights boardwalk is bookended by two 300-foot-long (91 m) piers that feature amusement rides, carousels, log flumes, roller coasters, Ferris wheels and more. One of these piers is the world-famous Casino Pier, home to a 1913 circa merry-go-round, the Niagara Falls log flume and the Jet Star roller coaster. The other is the Funtown Amusement Pier home to the Tower of Fear, Seaside’s tallest Ferris wheel and a go-kart track. MTV Jersey Shore Cast Sightings

These days you can’t talk about the Jersey Shore without a reference to the tremendously popular MTV reality show, “Jersey Shore.” While visiting Seaside Heights, New Jersey during Independence Day weekend we saw several members of the cast on the boardwalk. Hundreds would swarm the stars, taking pictures and video with cell phones. Security surrounded them, attempting to keep order between the fans and those that just wanted to enjoy a stroll on the boards.

5 Things We Do in Philadelphia

Philadelphia is not only home to many national historical sites, it’s also home for me. Well sort of. I grew up in South Jersey and cheered for Philly sports teams, ate Philly Steaks and took school field trips to the The Franklin Institute Science Museum. Whenever we visit my family in South Jersey, I always take Aracely into the city for my favorite things to do in Philadelphia.

1. Run Up the Rocky Steps

In the Oscar winning film “Rocky”, Sylvester Stallone runs up the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps. If you drive by the Art Museum on a weekend you will find kids and adults reliving the climb, jumping up and down with fists in the air at the top.

2. Eat Philly Cheesesteaks

Notice that the word is plural. You can’t have just one cheesesteak in Philadelphia. Once you become familiar with the sandwich you will realize it tastes different around the city. Made from thinly sliced steak and melted cheese, Provolone, American or Cheez Whiz, in a long roll, preferably an Philadelphia Amoroso roll. You must go to South Philly and visit the headquarters of Cheesesteak history. Pat’s and Geno’s Steaks sit across the street from each other and have a big rivalry. This won’t be your best sandwich, so be sure to check out another famed cheesesteak establishment.

3. See the Liberty Bell

Visit the Independence National Historic Park in Old City Philadelphia for an incredible tour of our Nation’s history. Most significant is the Liberty Bell. Enter the free museum and learn about the history of the bell and how it was used as a symbol throughout history for different causes.

4. Watch a Phillies Game at Citizens Bank Park

Considered one of the best ball parks in all of baseball, Citizens Bank Park standing room only tickets are perfect for any visitor looking to catch a game of the 2008 World Champions Philadelphia Phillies. With an open main concourse (360 degrees) you find that seats aren’t necessary. The open outfield provides scenic views of Philadelphia’s Center City Skyline. Philadelphia has a rich sports history dating back to the 1800′s. Don’t forget to join the tailgate party.

5. Walk South Street

Beginning at the Delaware River, South Street is famed for its mix of eclectic shops, bars, and eateries. Stop by Jim’s for cheesesteaks, get a tattoo, pick up some condoms at Condom Kingdom, tour the mosaic buildings or bar hop at night.

I am biased, Philadelphia is my favorite city. After spending some time in the city you’ll realize it’s a big city with a small town feel, and they are passionately connected with their sports teams.

Interstate toll collectors wear loose fitting tropical shirts on approach into Miami. Baseball caps are pressed over their bulbous glasses, covering faces etched into permanent frowns.

Businessmen in polo shirts yak on the phone, driving top down convertibles.

Apartment buildings lining the beach out reach the skyscrapers in the central business district. They’re an instant reminder that Miami is just as famous for retirees looking for a sea change as it is for economic output.

A relaxed, cosmopolitan atmosphere fills the Friday afternoon air. American tourists lap it up, having traveled south for a break from the cold snap.

Locals enjoy extra time in the sun, finishing early due to shortened working hours – a product of the
Global Financial Crisis.

Locals shopping on Lincoln road near the famous south beach, strut like celebrities wanting to be noticed. Fashonistas wear premium European brands sporting deep fake tans and tiny dogs, only willing to join the crowds when stopping in at McDonald’s for a burger and fries.

Many appear to be engaging in the struggle to achieve the perfect human body.

They make frail human features like skinny pale arms and a fragile woman with down syndrome sipping coffee, stand out from the crowd.

Neighborhoods change quickly, presenting an extreme patchwork of economic and social colors.

Waterfront palaces on the famous Star Island merge into dollar stores, run down high schools and the projects of Liberty city; a district made famous for it’s portrayal in the video game Grand Theft Auto.

Cuban flags and Haitian art work line the streets in the neighbourhoods of Little Havana and Little Haiti.

Advertisements in Spanish and Creole posted on power poles act as a reminder of how English is only one of several dominant languages that make up this city.

Cubans dance in line while waiting for their order. An armed guard lazily puffs on a cigar, waiting for his partner to finish up inside the bank.

Even the banks are overflowing with Latin American money, stored by Hispanic investors afraid of a natural disaster or government fall out in their home country. It’s often said that Miami is the biggest financial hub in central America.

However, beyond Miami’s initial image of wealth and glamor incredible diversity is to be found, if you’re willing to look for it.

The Best Waterfront State Campground in the Florida Keys

There are several large state campgrounds located in the Southern Florida Keys. This photo of the day was taken from Long Key State Park on Long Key, which is in Marathon, Florida. Some sites are off the water and cheaper, but you can’t beat this site for sunsets and sunrises at $40USD per night.

Key West

Spectators cry out in admiration as the sun melts into the Atlantic.

Jamaican street performers jump through hoops, acrobats blow through conk shells while fat dogs wearing flower hats collect loose change. Every character forms a collection of oddities that makes the distinction between bohemian locals and satisfied tourists.
The people of Key West are half the attraction. Locals have a glint in their eye that says they have all the time in the world. People linger, not walking to a specific place, but rather an experience they will find along the way.

Retirees smile, trying to enjoy a more subdued version of their youth. Their children have only just started the life of work and mortgages; a world they have just departed.

Key style homes exhibit green, pink and orange pastel colors that jar the eye. Tacky, overused fairy lights cover the trees outside restaurants reflecting bright lights off diner’s faces. Some appear to have forgotten that the swaying palm trees and temperate weather of the Keys speak for themselves.

Men puff away in Cigar Clubs talking proudly about sexual encounters with women twice their looks. Elements of Cuban culture flow out of the cigars they smoke and the shirts clinging to their chests.
Cuba is a nation at the back of everybody’s mind, bobbing at the bottom of every boat’s GPS screen. The famous Key West marker even mentions that it’s only ’90 miles to Cuba’. Irony is, I doubt Cuba has ever considered creating a marker measuring the opposite direction.

While Key West is so close to a political enemy of the US, it’s residents are far away from the institutions in Washington D.C that help create such political differences.
People’s lives simply bob up and down like the beat of a reggae song. Not going anywhere, not doing anything. Just riding the waves that push up along the coast, while the sunsets over the Atlantic.

The Green Iguana or Common Iguana on a Reef in Key West, Florida

We found this large iguana on the rocks surrounding the island of Key West. Although it looks like it belongs there, Iguanas are non-native to the area and have become an invasive species.

The Green Iguana or Common Iguana (Iguana iguana) is a large, arboreal herbivorous species of lizard of the genus Iguana native to Central and South America.
